Methodology & Data Sources
This page explains how the Chipotle Nutrition Calculator sources, stores, calculates, reviews, and corrects nutrition information. The project is independent and is not operated by, sponsored by, or endorsed by Chipotle.
Who Maintains This Methodology?
This methodology is maintained by Muhammad Kamran Latif, Founder & Data Editor. The project does not present its publisher as a registered dietitian or medical professional. The reliability standard is transparent source handling: use official Chipotle sources where available, retain provenance so values can be checked independently, identify derived values, and leave unsupported nutrients unavailable instead of guessing.
See the Editorial Policy for the site’s sourcing and claim standards and the Changelog for meaningful public updates.
Current-menu verification: September 2026
Current production dataset: 160 selectable nutrition records · 163 total tracked records · 7 meal types · 6 nutrition goals
Primary Nutrition Sources
The current U.S.-focused dataset is maintained across three source/review layers.
March 2025 U.S. Nutrition Facts PDF
The historical/full-table foundation uses Chipotle’s March 2025 U.S. Nutrition Facts publication:

The production dataset was also reviewed against official U.S. menu nutrition information available during the August 2026 menu audit.

September 2026 Current-Menu Synchronization
In September 2026, current menu availability was rechecked separately from the August nutrition-row audit. That synchronization added current limited-time Pollo Asado and Chili Lime Chips records, kept Cilantro Lime Sauce variants marked limited time, and moved Honey Chicken records to historical provenance after the limited-time item ended.
Current-menu status is stored separately from nutrition provenance. A record can remain in the historical dataset for auditability while being excluded from current calculator choices.
For allergen and special-diet questions, use the restaurant’s current official information:

The project does not claim that its local dataset is live-synced with Chipotle.
What Is Stored in the Production Dataset?
The calculator currently uses a locally maintained, versioned nutrition dataset containing 163 tracked nutrition records. The current calculator exposes 160 selectable records: 143 standard active records and 17 limited-time active records. Three Honey Chicken records are retained as historical provenance and excluded from current selection.
Entries can include fields such as serving size, calories, calories from fat, total fat, saturated fat, trans fat, cholesterol, sodium, carbohydrates, dietary fiber, sugar, protein, meal/context eligibility, and source/audit notes.
Not every reviewed source exposes every nutrient for every row.
Current, limited-time, and historical status
- Current: a standard item or serving record available to the current calculator.
- Current limited time: a currently selectable limited-time item whose availability may change.
- Historical: retained for source traceability and audit history but excluded from current calculator choices.
How Calculator Totals Are Calculated
For a standard build, the calculator sums the nutrition values of the selected ingredients and applies the portion behavior supported by the current calculator rules.
Meal type can also affect the calculation structure. For example:
- Burrito includes a flour-tortilla baseline.
- Burrito Bowl has no tortilla baseline.
- Quesadilla uses quesadilla-specific baseline items.
- Tacos have quantity-specific behavior.
- Kids Meal keeps kids-specific serving contexts separate.
Nutrition goals affect guidance, starters, and suggestions. They do not change the underlying nutrition values of ingredients.
Portion Handling
Where supported, the calculator can offer Normal, Light, Extra, or Double portions. These are calculator estimates based on the current portion rules; they are not a measurement of a specific restaurant scoop.
Actual restaurant servings can vary.
Missing and Unavailable Nutrient Values
A missing nutrient value must not be interpreted as a confirmed zero.
During the August 2026 audit, some official row-level captures exposed calories, fat, protein, and carbs but did not visibly expose sodium or other nutrients. Those fields should be treated as unavailable/unknown unless a verified source supports a numeric value.
Required display rule
Where a nutrient is unavailable:
- display — or Not available rather than
0, - exclude it from “lowest” or “under X” rankings/filters,
- do not treat it as a favorable value in goal recommendations,
- and make incomplete meal totals clear if an unknown value affects the total.
This rule is especially important for sodium.
Why Calculator Results Are Estimates
Published serving values are useful for planning and comparison, but a restaurant order can differ because of serving-size variation, restaurant preparation, ingredient availability, limited-time menu changes, light/extra/double portions, and future recipe or nutrition updates.
The calculator is intended for informational planning and comparison. It is not a laboratory measurement and should not be described as medically exact.
For strict dietary needs, allergies, medical conditions, or final nutrition decisions, use current official restaurant information and appropriate professional guidance.
Article and Comparison Data
Where possible, nutrition values in supporting pages should be rendered from the same production dataset using the site’s dynamic shortcodes/widgets rather than manually retyped into article copy.
This reduces the risk that an article and the calculator show different values after a dataset update.
Review and Update Process
When the menu or source data changes, the preferred process is:
- Review the official U.S. source.
- Record the source/date and affected entries.
- Update the production dataset.
- Run calculator QA.
- Recheck dynamic article widgets.
- Recheck any manually written data claims.
- Record a meaningful change in the site changelog.
A page’s “last reviewed” date should change only when its data, methodology, or substantive content has actually been reviewed or updated.
Corrections
If you find a possible discrepancy, please report a nutrition-data issue with the ingredient/item name, the value in question, and the source you are comparing it with.
When a correction is verified, the production dataset should be updated first so the calculator and dynamic supporting content remain aligned.
Independence
Chipotle Nutrition Calculator is an independent informational project. It is not an official Chipotle product and is not operated by, sponsored by, or endorsed by Chipotle.
